McShay gave Mayfield a 52 overall grade in his quarterback rankings for the 2018 NFL Draft. Mayfield is currently the ninth-ranked quarterback on McShay’s board. USC quarterback Sam Darnold ranked No. 1 among quarterbacks with a 94 overall grade. Oklahoma State quarterback Mason Rudolph was No. 5 at 72 overall.
“Mayfield has the mobility, accuracy and football IQ you look for, but I’m concerned about his frame (listed at 6-foot-0, 205 pounds) and arm strength to put the ball in tight windows in the NFL,” McShay said. “He projects as a career backup, which makes him a Day 3 prospect.”
Kiper is skeptical of Mayfield’s NFL potential as well. He ranked the Sooners quarterback as the third-best senior passer in this draft class, but acknowledged Mayfield’s excellence at the college level.
“Look, Mayfield’s not Johnny Football – he’s not going to be a first-round pick,” Kiper said. “But he’s an incredible college quarterback and playmaker, and he plays with a chip on his shoulder. He’s fun to watch.”
Mayfield has been a Heisman finalist each of the past two years. He threw for 3,965 yards last season with 40 touchdowns and 8 interceptions.
